All staff at the nuclear power station are accounted for and are in a safe area within the plant. Sadly, we can confirm one man has died as a result of the incident. The family of the man have been informed, and our thoughts remain with them at this extremely difficult time.

Three other men have been taken to hospital.

Emergency services are working closely with EDF and other agencies to respond to the incident and the safety of the public remains paramount.

1/2 A multi-agency response is underway after an incident at Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station was reported just after 9am today.

A pipe leak in reactor one has resulted in a release of Carbon Dioxide into the air, and is heading in both an easterly direction towards the north sea, and also in a south westerly direction.

Currently, the affected area is within a 2km radius of the power station. Al business within this area have been advised to stay indoors, close windows and for staff and visitors to take iodine tablets.

Anyone outside of the 2km radius does not need to take any...

We're continuing to deal with an incident at Hartlepool Power Station. Everyone in the pictured Detailed Emergency Planning Zone, the pre-defined area closest to the power station which does not contain any homes, is advised to go inside, shut all doors and windows, take pre-issued stable iodine tablets as directed in accompanying leaflets and tune into local media for more information.

If you're outside of this area, there is nothing you need to do at this time.

A number of road closures are in place following an incident at Hartlepool Power Station.

⛔ The A178 Tees Road is closed at the junction with the Elizabeth Way Road
⛔ Brenda Road is closed at the junction with Seaton Lane
⛔ The A178 Seaton Carew Road is closed at the junction with the A1185 at Seal Sands Roundabout

Drivers are urged to avoid the area while emergency services deal with the incident.

We are working with partner agencies in response to a major incident in Hartlepool. Please see below statement from EDF and follow their advice...

“An offsite nuclear emergency was declared at Hartlepool Power Station today. This means radiation has been detected beyond the site boundary. Because of this everyone in the Detailed Emergency Planning Zone, the pre-defined area closest to the power station which does not contain any homes, is advised to go inside, shut all doors and windows and take pre-issued stable iodine tablets as directed in accompanying leaflets.
