NUCLEAR LEAK DEATH AT HARTLEPOOL

One man has died and three more are in hospital after a major emergency unfolded at Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station when a pipe burst in Reactor One this morning, sending a cloud of Carbon Dioxide into the air.

The leak, first reported just after 9am, spread fast - heading east towards the North Sea and southwest across town.

A 2km exclusion zone was put in place. Businesses inside were told to seal windows, stay indoors, and take iodine tablets immediately. Officials insist anyone outside the 2km zone is safe.

1/2 A multi-agency response is underway after an incident at Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station was reported just after 9am today.

A pipe leak in reactor one has resulted in a release of Carbon Dioxide into the air, and is heading in both an easterly direction towards the north sea, and also in a south westerly direction.

Currently, the affected area is within a 2km radius of the power station. Al business within this area have been advised to stay indoors, close windows and for staff and visitors to take iodine tablets.

Anyone outside of the 2km radius does not need to take any...

Chief Superintendent Rachel Stockdale didn't confirm if investigators will be looking at criminal intent - she told reporters 'it needs to be understood it needs to be explored, at this moment in time it's an investigation' before the press conference was brought to an end by the Office for Nuclear Regulation

Cleveland Fire Brigade say they sent 8 fire engines and 32 firefighters to the scene of today's nuclear leak at Hartlepool Power Station. @ClevelandFB Area Manager Dave Preston says they helped to get the injured workers out of the site but didn't confirm whether the injured were able to walk or not. He confirmed firefighters are monitored before being able to go home to make sure they're not spreading radiation. He says they have strict rules in place to monitor the radiation levels. Mr Preston says they'll go home tonight

Authorities dealing with today's radiation leak in Hartlepool have defended a so called 'information blackout' after the incident was first reported this morning. EDF say they did issue essential guidance when it first happened which they say was vital for the health of those living nearby.
